Eleanor's husband Julian, a cybersecurity officer, lets his protégée Chloe use their smart home, car and network to "practice" hacking on Eleanor's life. After a crash leaves Eleanor in the ICU, Julian calls it a game and refuses to blame Chloe, who resembles his late sister.

Eleanor discovers Julian knew of every attack and encouraged them. She posts a public condemnation naming his company, and he warns her to keep family business private. He then brings Chloe home, forcing a monitoring bracelet onto Eleanor and locking her in the attic for three days.
