George Foster works in construction, where there are no women for months at a time. On a slow sleeper train home for the holidays, he finds himself bunking above Lauren Ward, a gorgeous college student. From the top bunk he watches her, and when she leaves for the bathroom he sneaks down and presses her stockings to his nose. She returns, flushed, and their eyes meet; soon the stockings are back on her legs and she lets him look all he wants.

Lauren admits her boyfriend never satisfies her, so she relies on toys, though she says they cannot compare to the real thing. George understands that loneliness all too well. When a conductor scolds him for spying, Lauren waves it off, saying the man above has been nice to him. That night she falls asleep, and George, still burning, hears a strange sound from her bunk.

Looking down, he sees Lauren asleep with her legs spread, touching herself, her own hand clearly not enough. Seeing no one else around, he quietly climbs down to her bedside.
