Shannon has just been named general manager, but the moment the chairman makes the announcement, strange floating comments appear before her eyes, narrating her life as though she were the villain of someone else's story. The new hire, Cindy Carlton, accuses Shannon of stealing her client by sleeping with an older man, and the comments cheer Cindy on as the wronged heroine.

When Shannon's longtime boyfriend, Franklin Lindt, slaps her and demands she hand over the deal and resign, she finally produces photos of the thousands of cattle and sheep on her family's ranch. Selling beef and lamb to clients, she points out, is not a crime. Cindy then displays hotel photos as proof of an affair, and Franklin seizes on them, though Shannon knows the truth behind the changed clothes.
