At eight, Kyle unplugged his brother Toby's mechanical heart to charge a phone, leaving Toby with permanent nerve damage. Their parents poured everything into keeping Toby alive, while Kyle faded into the background of the household. Toby believed his parents loved him fiercely despite his broken body.
Then the national college placement deadline arrives. When the house loses power, his mother rips the backup battery from his heart to power the laptop, slaps him, and locks him in his room. As the portal closes and his family celebrates Kyle's success, Toby collapses, bleeding and paralyzed, unable to make a sound.
His father returns home to cheers for Kyle, while behind the locked door Toby's heart gives its final shudder. When he opens his eyes again, weightless and free of pain, his hand passes straight through his mother's shoulder.
