From the back cover

Beth Dickerson's mother orders her to give up her room so her cousin Scott Henson can have it, insisting she sleep on the living room couch. When Beth protests, her mother reminds her she leaves for college soon anyway, while her father stays silent. Beth knows her mother drains the household to support Uncle Ronald's family, and she has said nothing about the lottery ticket in her pocket.

At a welcome dinner of seafood Beth cannot touch, her mother berates her for putting on an act. Ordered to wash dishes she never dirtied, Beth finally refuses. Scott plays the wounded guest, and her mother blames Beth for resenting him. Beth quietly packs a suitcase, ready to claim her winnings and study abroad.

After the lottery office deposits the money into her secret account, Beth tells her teacher she will take the overseas spot and quits her summer job. She returns home to find her mother already waiting for her.

"And doesn't Scott have his own place to live?"
