From the back cover
Three days after his mother dies, Owen Redwood's father brings home a four-year-old girl named Poppy and declares her part of the family. Owen, shattered by grief, smashes everything in sight and screams that he has no sister. A shard of glass cuts past Poppy's face, and the terror seals her voice; a doctor later calls it selective mutism. Their father soon leaves and never returns, and Owen, eighteen and rarely home, treats the girl as invisible.
Poppy clings to the only family she has left, following Owen through the huge Redwood house, offering him soup, drawing him a good-luck sign before his final exams. He slaps the bowl away, tells her his mother had only one child, and walks past her without a word. Yet at night she hears him sobbing behind his closed door.
When the Redwood fortune crumbles and their father is gone, Owen grabs her arm to throw her out, and Poppy finally forces out her first broken words: she will be good, if only he does not throw her away.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
"My mother has been dead for three days! And you bring this… thing into her house?"
"A sister? I don't have a goddamn sister!"
Shards of glass from a shattered vase nearly sliced my eye open. The shock of it all stole my voice, clamping my throat shut until not a single sound could escape.
My father had brought me here, but that was the extent of his involvement. He never looked at me, never spoke to me. Owen hated me, which meant he ignored me completely.
