Three years after her son Louis died in an accident, Pamela returns from his memorial and drives to the wedding apartment she had prepared for him. The lights are on in Unit 601. Red New Year's wreaths hang on the door, her key no longer turns, and a child bursts out to greet her as a stranger in his own home.

Inside, a young woman named Beulah Henson calls for Julius to come home to dinner, and a boy named Myron James carries her son's face. A family portrait dated three days after Louis's burial shows her husband Julius with his arm around Beulah. Her son's memorial tablet lies snapped in two beneath the garbage in a closet.

When Julius arrives, he shields Beulah and the child behind him and begs to explain. Pamela walks out with the broken tablet against her chest, holding her questions for another day.

The dim light was on, shadows shifting behind the walls.

I had just stepped out of the elevator when I spotted red New Year's wreaths on the door of my son's wedding apartment.

I slid my key in and turned it twice. The lock didn't budge.

Before I could knock, a child burst through the door and nearly knocked me over.

My son had been dead for three years. His apartment should have been empty.

From the kitchen came a woman's voice: "Don't go outside! Call your dad and tell him to come home for dinner."

The voice was bright and clear. The smell of a home-cooked meal filled the air.
