From the back cover

Three days before the SAT, a car shatters Jovie Jevan's right leg. At her hospital bed, Govind Swinton admits he arranged the crash, saying she upset Yvette, her older sister. Fifteen years ago, Jovie was hurt saving Yvette from a speeding car, but Yvette told their parents Jovie pushed her, and that night Jovie was left at a children's home. Govind later promised to protect her for life.

Now he tells her a broken leg keeps her from the SAT so Yvette can become the city's top scorer without pressure. He holds her admission ticket, and when Yvette bursts in, the flame of his lighter catches the paper; only ash remains. At school, Ms. Todd refuses a replacement, saying Mr. Swinton called her emotionally unstable and the system is closed. Outside, the honor board still shows her first place in the citywide mock exam.

Inside the book Opening excerpt

Three days before the SAT, a car slammed into me. My right leg was ruined.

Govind stood beside my hospital bed and said, "I set it up."

He pointed at the cast on my leg and smiled. "You upset Yvette. It's just a broken leg. Better that than watching her cry."

I stared at him, stunned, then dug my nails into his arm hard enough to draw blood.

He shoved me off without a care. Then he patted my head like he always used to.
