Mirea Quinn has loved Roger Quinn in secret for seven years, ever since the man who raised her kissed her on her eighteenth birthday. When Roger is about to announce his engagement to her half-sister Lisa, Mirea returns to Beltown to confess. The room laughs at her, and Roger answers coldly that he thought she was Lisa, that he feels nothing for her. He even asks for the family heirloom bracelet back.

Humiliated, Mirea leaves Beltown to marry the son of a wealthy godmother. On her wedding day Roger calls off his engagement and asks for another chance, but she turns him away. Returning home unannounced, she finds Roger and Lisa discussing their engagement, and the relatives' disdain for the outcast daughter of Hugo Bentley resurfaces.

That night, passing Roger's room, Mirea overhears him tell Lisa that he took her in only to strengthen the Quinn family's alliances.
