Five months pregnant, Summer Shafer believes Adrian Weldon is finally giving her the Valentine's Day proposal she deserves. Instead, he drives her to a mountain campground owned by Celeste Vane, the woman he never got over, to help promote its opening. There, Celeste serves her a pot of mushroom soup meant for pregnant women, and Summer is left vomiting, dehydrated, and covered in a rash that costs her a beauty product launch and triggers a crushing breach-of-contract penalty.

When her manager Jenna posts a public warning, Adrian is furious, insisting Celeste is a divorced woman trying to rebuild her life. On Valentine's Day he shoves Summer into the car to apologize, then takes her purse and phone and abandons her on a muddy mountain road in a torrential downpour. A park ranger finds her, and in the ambulance Adrian's voice message plays, calling her a faker. At the hospital, the doctor warns her baby is in distress and recommends terminating the pregnancy. Summer signs the consent form, then calls her lawyer to start foreclosure on the apartment Adrian put up as collateral.
