When her mother Vivian remarries, the narrator's childhood becomes a tool for extortion: coached and struck with a plastic coat hanger, she is made to phone her biological father Robert with invented emergencies so money can be squeezed out of him and spent on her stepfather Greg and stepbrother Luke. Robert eventually cuts contact, and the shakedown stops.
On graduation day, Vivian declares her maternal duties legally discharged and hands her daughter a single scuffed suitcase of hand-me-downs while Luke unboxes a new Apple suite. Years later, after taking the helm of her father's company as Managing Director, she finds Vivian at her office door with her deadbeat stepson in tow.
At ten, the girl secretly warns Robert that every emergency was a lie, and the money dries up. That evening Luke demands an Apple Watch and Vivian orders her to invent a piano-funding plea; for the first time, she refuses to make the call.
