From the back cover
On his forty-ninth birthday, Carter collapses from a brain tumor attack. While doctors stabilize him, his wife Monica snaps at him for interrupting her airport departure with Tim, and his daughter Julia jokes that his death would bring a welcome insurance payout. Strangely, Carter feels only relief.
Blocked by both women, Carter messages Tim to bring Monica home, then hands her divorce papers. Monica refuses to believe him, accusing him of faking illness and throwing a tantrum. She warns that a divorce means he leaves with nothing, certain he cannot survive without her family's wealth.
Carter recalls the system that granted him this one life, his mother's death, and twenty years spent working at Monica's company. He asks for nothing, not the house, the money, or Julia, and tells Monica she is finally free to give Tim the life he deserves.
