In a public lecture on derivatives, Shawn Larson, a gifted student in a special dual-enrollment program, hurls his water bottle at the blackboard and mocks his professor and classmates as idiots. His mother, waiting outside, beams with approval, and a reporter films everything. When the class representative, Ariel Potter, confronts him, Shawn insults her and threatens Mr. Conrad, then walks out.
