On the night of the worst storm in a decade, Sarah's childhood friend Brenda calls in tears, begging her to send her feverish eighteen-year-old son Austin to drive Brenda's paralyzed daughter Lily home. Then crimson words appear before Sarah's eyes, warning that Lily is already dead and that Austin will be framed for her murder.

Sarah refuses, but Brenda presses, playing the martyr and then going behind her back to text Austin directly. Sarah knows Brenda's history of manipulation, and the warnings spell out ruin: Austin's scholarship revoked, prison, and death, her smokehouse bankrupt, her husband David fired, and Brenda walking free.

With Austin already reaching for his keys, Sarah must hold the line against a friend determined to use her son as a scapegoat.
