From the back cover

On Christmas Eve, Lenny Gibson messages his friend Noah about renting a Maybach for their cat's trip home at seven thousand dollars each. Noah, facing a mortgage and fearing layoffs under his boss Zane Hampton, refuses and sends his cat Bebe by air freight instead. Lenny insists he will ride back with Noah, and his parents Briana Hall and William Gibson give him twenty thousand dollars for Noah's birthday gift.

But Lenny never arrives. His parents appear at Noah's door demanding to know where he is, and Briana slaps Noah, accusing him of lying. When Noah shows his plane ticket and Uber confirms no such car existed, Briana collapses and is rushed away by ambulance.

Noah cannot understand why Lenny used him as a shield, and the Gibsons' suspicion only deepens as they beg him to reveal where their only son has gone.

Inside the book Opening excerpt

On Christmas Eve, my friend, Lenny Gibson, sends me a text message.

"I've rented a Maybach for our cat so that we can go back to our hometown for the holidays. It'll be seven thousand dollars per person. The car is fitted with air conditioning and security cameras. Don't you think this is a good deal?"

I glance at my bank app, which has just deducted my monthly house mortgage from my account.

"Nah. Bebe isn't a spoiled princess. I can't afford to rent such an expensive car."
