From the back cover
For seven years, Julia Fenner has believed herself the wife of Colonel Everett Warden, who visits only on summer and winter leave and insists the conditions near Fort Ashcombe are too harsh for her. Then, at a housing office, a clerk tells her that the papers in her hand are forged and that Everett's lawful record lists another wife, Lydia Warden, and a son, Peter. Julia goes to the address and, from outside the yard, hears the warm laughter of a family she never knew existed.
When Everett telephones, tender as ever, she says nothing and instead accepts a classified post at Briar Ridge Research Station from Professor Amos Bell, an appointment that will seal her public identity. She resigns from Latchford Community School, where Principal Walter Harris assumes she is simply joining her husband. Then Everett arrives at the gate with Lydia beside him, calling her the widow of a fallen man, and Julia must decide how long she can keep performing a marriage built on forgery.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
In the seventh year of Julia Fenner's marriage to Colonel Everett Warden, she carried her family papers to the housing office to buy a subsidized faculty apartment and was told the record in her hand was a forgery.
How could that be possible?
Certain the clerk had made a mistake, Julia politely asked her to check again. "My husband transferred my records after we married."
The clerk checked the county and military-family registry again, her patience visibly thinning, and looked at Julia with something close to scorn.
