But the day Rachel collects her new car and gives the passenger seat to Dennis Collin, Adrian goes quiet, and Rachel finds his silence more unsettling than any outburst.

Rachel explains that Dennis cannot bear the smell of the stew house that clings to Adrian, and she soon threatens to sell the place his mother left him. When Adrian learns the property is now in her name, he signs away his own half. The next morning Rachel arrives with a crew to strip the stew house bare, and Adrian races back to find his mother's painted sign in the mud and an old wooden box among the rubbish.

With a plane ticket to Dufonce already in his pocket, Adrian has little left to lose, and everything he still means to save.
