From the back cover
In Riverbend, a village built along the water's edge, legend holds that an ancient river god dwells in the depths. Every month on the 15th, a young woman is dressed in red and sent into the river to consummate a union with him. Once, the river wives returned to shore and went on to remarry and bear children, but now they no longer come back alive: each bride's corpse floats up the next day, tortured beyond recognition.
This month, Aria is chosen. The village chief, Harold Whitmore, delivers her wedding dress and orders her sister-in-law Clara Jensen, a former river wife, to prepare her. Clara's chest of rods and her whispered warning leave Aria shaken, while her neighbor Violet Marsh insists the river god has two of those things and that no woman can withstand him.
Blindfolded and carried off by male attendants, Aria clings to Clara's final words: during the consummation, find a way to remove the blindfold. It could save her life.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
There was a river that ran through our village.
According to the legend, a river god dwelled in its depths, and every month on the 15th, the village had to send a young woman to enter the water and serve him.
At first, everything seemed normal. After their service to the river god, the women would return to shore, go home, and eventually marry and start families. But this year, the peace was shattered.
