From the back cover
When her parents move into a new house, the smart lock is set to recognize the faces of both family dogs — but not their own daughter. Locked out in the stairwell, she calls her mother, who tells her to hold a dog up to the scanner. The lock only holds five faces, and one is reserved for her sister Scarlett Sullivan, who has lived overseas for years. Her father snaps that Scarlett bought the dogs and would be heartbroken if they couldn't get through the door.
Scarlett announces she is flying home, and the family group chat floods with photos of her brand-new bedroom and the dogs' cozy room. Nobody remembers that the narrator sleeps on a mat in the storage closet. Her boyfriend Fergus Gilbert, who answers Scarlett within seconds, ignores her plea for a place to stay. At dawn her parents blame her for not being ready, and she finally accepts an invitation to a three-year Antarctic research posting.
At the airport they leave without her, and at lunch Fergus peels shrimp for Scarlett while the table fills with dishes she cannot eat.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
Mom and Dad moved into a new house. The smart lock was set to recognize the faces of both dogs, but somehow it skipped mine, their own biological daughter.
I went downstairs to walk the dog and came back to find I couldn't get in.
I called my mother. She sounded irritated.
"Aren't the dogs right there? Both of them can get in. Just pick one up and hold it to the scanner."
