For eighteen years of marriage, Eve has watched her husband Mark Carter drain their fortune into debt, all to support the son of a fallen comrade. She works herself to the bone, and her brilliant daughter Ella, a valedictorian, juggles five part-time jobs to help. Then, on her way to one of those jobs, Ella is struck by a horrific car accident and desperately needs medical care.
As Ella lies dying, she whispers that she misses her father. Eve calls Mark a hundred times, but he is busy throwing a lavish graduation banquet for Leo Miller, the son of his comrade's widow, Sarah Miller. By the time Eve reaches him, Ella is gone. The money she and her daughter bled for is a fraction of what Mark spends on Leo's fireworks.
Returning home, Eve overhears Mark admit he has been pretending to be poor while caring for Sarah and Leo. Clutching her daughter's death certificate, Eve must decide what remains of a marriage built on her child's sacrifice.
