On their fifth anniversary, Asher tells Jesse he is moving to Denver to open a new branch. Jesse waits up all night, clings to him, and asks about long distance; Asher only mutters a cold reply. Later, when Jesse threatens to buy a ticket and appear at his door, Asher ends things: "Jesse, let's break up." Jesse answers sweetly, then quietly slips a lung cancer diagnosis back into the drawer. Jesse has no family left, only Asher, whose company has just gone public.

Jesse checks into the hospital alone for a biopsy, hiding the diagnosis from Asher, who returns that weekend to pack and settle the deed transfer. Panicked that he might find the diagnosis sheet, Jesse rushes home, covering bandages and IV lines with a heavy coat and cheap lipstick. Asher spots the smudge and the lipstick and assumes Jesse has already moved on, sneering that Jesse wastes no time. Jesse, who could never want anyone else, says nothing.

I had waited up for him all night.

Rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I dragged myself off the sofa and wrapped my arms around his waist.

"So, we're really doing the long-distance thing, huh?" I murmured, clinging to him, unable to let go.

Asher didn't hug me back.

He only muttered a low, cold "Yeah."

Back then, I had no idea he was putting distance between us on purpose.

I was foolish enough to keep calling him, bombarding his phone with messages.
