From the back cover

Nineteen days after giving birth, a young mother tells her mother that something feels wrong, and is told that everyone is tired after a baby. Her hands shake so badly she drops the bottle; her mother Carol calls it a show for outsiders. So she plants hydrangeas on the balcony — seventeen pots, watered ten minutes a day, the only moments she feels alive.

Then the balcony is empty, the flowers pulled out because they attract mosquitoes. Her husband Mark says they were just flowers; her mother moves the crib into her own room and locks the door, and at Noah's sip-and-see the relatives praise Carol for raising the baby while the mother sits in the farthest corner.

When Beth asks how she is recovering, Carol's voice cuts across the room.

Inside the book Opening excerpt

On the nineteenth day after giving birth, I told my mother something felt wrong.

She didn't even look up.

"Who isn't exhausted after having a baby? I didn't have anyone helping me after I gave birth, and I still got through it."

After that, I stopped talking about it.

At night, when Noah cried, I got up to warm his bottle. My hands shook so badly that I dropped it on the floor.
