From the back cover
Elara, a medical student married to the brilliant young forensic professor Dr. Julian Thorne, discovers a hidden dark room behind the bookshelf in his study. Inside, glass jars hold specimens of her own body — a fingernail, a strand of hair — and a recording loops her cries from the operating room during her miscarriage. Julian appears at the doorway with a scalpel, speaking of turning her into his perfect masterpiece, while Serena Bellwether, his ex-girlfriend newly returned to the same hospital, asks when he will bring her Elara's vocal cords. Trapped and drugged, Elara hears Julian's final words before everything goes dark.
She wakes in their master bedroom with an intact neck, a week before the miscarriage she remembers. Julian brings her breakfast, gentle and doting, and denies that Serena was ever in the house. At school her friend Chloe confirms the date, and a dinner invitation from Serena arrives that Elara knows may be a trap. Sitting across from the two of them, she must hide her terror and decide how to move before the future she remembers can repeat itself.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
Inside, dozens of glass jars held specimens of my body parts.
From a fingernail he'd snipped when we first held hands, to a strand of hair he'd collected after our intimacy last night.
And in the center of the room, a recording device looped my own voice.
"Help me, Julian, please, no, it hurts…"
It was the recording of my pleas from the operating room when I had my unexpected miscarriage last month.
