Margaret Sinclair has spent five years building a company alongside her boyfriend, Daniel Carter, and carrying its sales on her back. When she finally hands in her resignation, he barely looks up — he is too busy teaching the new intern, Kimberley Lester, how to close a ten-million-dollar deal. He assumes she is only angling for attention, and shreds the letter without a second thought.

But Daniel still holds the one thing that keeps her obedient: her mother's medical expense approval, sitting unsigned on his desk while her mother lies in the ICU. He orders Margaret to attend a dinner with Mr. Ashford, a client with wandering hands, and to bring Kimberley along to train her.
