From the back cover

Yvonne Simpson's mother, Jennifer Wright, is also her homeroom teacher, and at school she insists on being called Ms. Wright. When Yvonne asks to sit out the half-mile sprint because of chest pain, her mother tears up her excuse slip and accuses her of lying to slack off. Yet she warmly signs one for the class president, Quiana Sullivan, whose father sits on the Board of Education.

Yvonne carries a hospital report diagnosing acute myocarditis, but her mother warns her that unless she drops dead on the track, she will finish the race. Yvonne runs, collapses at the finish line, and hears her mother tell her to stop playing dead and get up.

As her classmates beg someone to call for help, her mother dismisses the fuss as an act, unwilling to let their class be disgraced.

Inside the book Opening excerpt

My own mother, who's the homeroom teacher of my class, approves Quiana's application with a smile. But she then throws mine to the floor.

"You're having a chest pain, you say? I can't believe you're able to come up with such lies just to avoid the half-mile sprint! I'd have known if you had a heart condition!

"Quiana is weak by nature, not to mention she's on her period right now, so she can't handle the agony. What about you, hmm?
