From the back cover
Juan Shaw is Harbor City's youngest chief of cardiac surgery, a man whose hands are the steadiest and whose heart is the coldest. Yet Vivian knows he is capable of gentleness — just never for her. The day after their engagement, her father suffers a stroke and is rushed to the emergency room, where the hospital needs two immediate family members to sign the consent form. Vivian calls Juan, but he is with his ex, Whitney Jackson, who is having a panic attack. He tells her to let the hospital start emergency treatment first.
Vivian spends the night alone outside the ward. When Juan finally arrives the next morning, he smells of disinfectant and perfume, and Whitney's messages keep pulling him away. He arranges a care plan and pays the bills, flawless and attentive — yet every time Whitney calls, he leaves. Vivian looks at the engagement ring he chose, the one meant to help him find her through the harbor fog, and realizes he no longer can.
She tells him she will handle her father's care herself. The fog is gone. She should go now.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
Juan Shaw was Harbor City's youngest chief of cardiac surgery. Everyone said his hands were the steadiest, and his heart was the coldest as well.
But I knew he wasn't incapable of gentleness.
It was just that his gentleness was simply never meant for me.
The day after our engagement, my father suddenly had a stroke and was rushed to the emergency room. The nurse told me they needed two immediate family members to sign the consent form.
I called Juan right away. The phone rang for a long time before he picked up, and a woman's weak sobs came through the line.
