From the back cover
Emily is pregnant and craving strawberries. Her husband David promises to buy them every day, yet never does, while his mother Martha mocks the craving and insists she will buy them instead. When Emily finally buys the fruit herself, washes it, and steps away to change, she returns to find only pale, gnawed cores left on the plate — the sweet tips bitten off by David, the middles by Martha, and bits of garlic and spinach stuck to the remains.
After a week of waiting, Emily flips the table and walks out, calling her mother to say she is getting the abortion. David chases her, snatches her phone, and accuses her of despising his mother. Then Martha sprints over, drops to her knees, and slaps her own face in the street.
Emily stands frozen, trapped between a husband who will not listen and a mother-in-law who turns every wound into a performance.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
I bought two pounds of them, brought them home, washed them perfectly clean, and called my husband and mother-in-law to come have some.
I went to my bedroom to change my clothes.
When I came back, the plate was full of pale, white cores.
The bright red, sweetest tips of the strawberries had been bitten off by my husband.
The middle parts had been gnawed away by my mother-in-law.
My mother-in-law, her mouth dripping with juice, pushed the plate toward me:
"Emily, eat! They’re so sweet!"
I stared at the pale, leftover bottoms of the strawberries.
