On her wedding day, Joy Perez discovers that her bridal makeup has been given to the bridesmaid, Carina Fox, and that her groom, Barnaby Pruitt, has been holding Carina in his arms. When Joy hands over her gown, Barnaby takes Carina's side, blaming Joy for upsetting a woman he once promised himself to. Carina faints, and Barnaby carries her out, threatening to call off the wedding.

Joy remembers the night before, when Carina changed the banquet menu and colors, and Barnaby left Joy to walk back alone, where three drunk men cornered her and broke her arm. She also remembers a phone call from the self she was three years ago.

Joy calls Barnaby's grandfather, Ethan Pruitt, and accepts a post in the lawless frontier region, knowing it means years apart from Barnaby. When Barnaby tells her to make amends to Carina, Joy agrees, and is handed a gaudy gold dress Carina chose for her.
