After the divorce, Todd's father Dave swallowed his pride and had his son ask Katherine for money each month. Fifty dollars was all he requested, and every transfer came with the same cold note. Then Dave dies, and Todd, alone, needs a thousand dollars to cover the cremation fee. He asks his mother for more than he ever has, and she wires two thousand, but only on the condition that Dave crawl back and beg her forgiveness.
At Marvin County Hospital, the billing clerk refuses to release the body without an immediate family member's signature. Todd calls Katherine, but she believes Dave is faking an illness to extort her, and Simon, the man who took Dave's place beside her, murmurs that the boy is being used as a bargaining chip. She hangs up.
Todd rides the bus to Marvin Enterprises and waits outside in the cold, determined to make his mother sign the paper before his father freezes in the cooling unit.
