When the Rogues besiege the town, Lenore Vexmoor flees into the forest with her twin sister, Riven Vexmoor. Wounded and poisoned by wolfsbane, she returns to find her fiance, Alpha Kael Ironfang, ordering that Riven be saved first. Riven is unharmed, yet their parents, Maren Emberly and Flint Vexmoor, and Kael lavish care on her while Lenore's wounds fester. The healer, Alva Redpaw, reports the antidote is gone, wasted on Riven.

Raised as the strong pure-blooded twin who supposedly stole everything from fragile, wolfless Riven, Lenore is treated as owing a debt she can never repay. Even Kael, once her only friend, now turns from her. With black blood seeping from her knees, she signs up for the Southern Border Patrol under Captain Caspian Leif, ready to leave the pack behind.

When the family's vehicle departs, every seat is taken. Kael asks Lenore to stay behind so her parents can tend to Riven, and she must decide whether to board or walk away for good.

The guard captain, Doren Sten, reports loudly, "Alpha Kael, two she-wolves in the pack are being torn apart. If we do everything we can, we should be able to save one of them."

Kael gives the order without a moment's hesitation, "Save Riven first. She has been frail since young—she won't be able to hold on much longer."

I freeze in place.

Riven pushes past me and throws herself into Kael's arms, sobbing.

"Kael, I'm right here. I'm fine."
