For five years Valerie Stanley has kept house for Gavin Henson, a celebrated wildlife painter. When her father lay dying, she begged Gavin for one portrait of him; he refused, saying he does not paint people. After her father's death she stayed, cooking his meals and washing the mud from his clothes.

Then she finds fifty sketchbooks hidden in the old house, fifteen hundred drawings of the same woman: Naomi Sullivan, the copywriter who travels with him. Gavin comes home, tosses his filthy clothes at her and asks why dinner is not ready. When she finally answers back, he tells her Naomi understands him and she never will. A pregnancy test turns positive; before she can speak, he rushes out to Naomi.

Valerie tells her friend Gloria Lyons she will not keep the baby. At breakfast, Gavin serves Naomi noodle soup in a bowl painted with a moon, the bowl he once said was not for Valerie.
