Lydia has spent three years writing all 470,000 lines of code for the CloudStow Warehouse System, a million-dollar contract for the company's biggest logistics client. Her colleague Mark handles the meetings and the presentations, and it is Mark who is praised, promoted to team lead, and rewarded with a 12% raise and a $50,000 bonus while Lydia receives 3% and a B+ rating. When a fresh graduate is hired at a higher salary than hers, she begins to see how little her work has been valued.

Then the layoff list arrives, and the first name on it is hers. Helen from HR offers N+1 months' pay and asks her to sign. Lydia signs without argument and smiles, because all the code sits on her own machine, its variables named in abbreviated Spanish and its comments drawn from obscure poetry.

Now the system has crashed, thirty thousand orders have vanished, and Mark is calling her in the middle of the night to fix it.
