After chemotherapy leaves her bald, Eliza is taken by her husband Daniel to a party, where his childhood friend Skylar mocks her appearance. Daniel offers no defense, calling her an embarrassment, and their son Leo joins in the cruelty. Back home, Daniel dismisses the humiliation as a joke and demands she be less petty.

Eliza files for divorce and adopts the son of Daniel's greatest rival. Returning through a downpour, she finds Skylar draped in Daniel's shirt in the master bedroom, pregnant and installed there while Eliza recovers from surgery. When Skylar feigns a fall, Daniel shoves Eliza into a wall and drags her to the hospital to apologize.

As her incision bleeds and old sacrifices resurface, Eliza collapses, only to wake to Daniel's cold indifference. Her resolve hardens.
