Sarah agrees to alternate holidays with her husband Ethan, and this Christmas is meant to be spent with her parents. Yet Ethan quietly turns the car around and drives toward his own hometown, pleading that his sister Jenny has come home with her son and wants a family photo. Reluctantly, Sarah gives in and calls her parents to explain.
At Ethan's family home, Jenny is cold and hostile, and her son Bobby clings to her side. On Christmas Eve, Ethan's mother asks Sarah to put Bobby's name under her apartment so he can attend school in the city. Sarah refuses to decide alone, saying the apartment belongs to her parents, and the table falls silent while Ethan says nothing.
The next day, Ethan insists Sarah offer a formal greeting to Jenny. When Sarah drops the gift, Jenny slaps her, and Bobby blames Sarah for his having no father. Ethan only watches, leaving Sarah to face his family alone.
