Paige Quinn was born at the cost of her mother's life, and her father and brother Marcus have never let her forget it. Marcus burns her with cigarette butts and calls her a murderer; their father, the finest doctor around, says the pain is simply her fate. Only her friend Mia offers her any warmth, and only the diary her mother left behind offers any comfort.

When Marcus falls ill with kidney failure, their father kneels before Paige and begs her to save him. She agrees to the surgery, asking one promise in return. The father performs the operation himself, saving the son he loves and taking the life of the daughter he has always hated.

After her death, the father turns himself in to the police, and Marcus loses his mind. The family that never saw Paige as one of their own must now live with what they did to her.
