From the back cover
Megan wakes in a hospital to find her husband Jack beside her, and realizes she has been returned to the moment she first learned she was pregnant. In the life before, her mother pushed her into early labor so her newborn son could donate bone marrow to her brother Billy, who had leukemia. The baby died of infection, Megan was struck by a car in her grief, and Jack leapt from a bridge with their daughter. Her family called her death justified.
Now Megan refuses to tell her mother she is expecting. When her mother presses her to hurry and be a good sister, Megan suggests that her mother bear a child herself. Her mother produces a diagnosis of menopause, but Megan has her own paper showing a small tumor, and she redirects the young cousin Ruby away from Jack's factory toward her father's office.
Then her daughter comes home sick from a lunch with Nana, and Megan finds Ruby settled in her mother's house. She means to keep her family safe this time.
