From the back cover
In her first life, Lyra warned her mother that adopting the son of a distant widowed relative, Fiona, would bring ruin. Her mother refused to listen, favoring the boy over her own daughter, and sent Lyra to live with a neighbor. The boy grew resentful, and after Lyra discovered he had stolen the house deed, he set fire to her rented apartment on New Year's Eve, burning her alive. The police accepted his alibi, and her family called her death an accident.
Now Lyra has opened her eyes again on the day her mother took her to pick up the boy. Fiona pushes the dirty child toward them, and he demands that his new mother choose between him and Lyra. Her mother chooses him without hesitation. This time Lyra does not argue. She accepts being moved into the storage room and quietly begins working part-time while studying, watching her brother's true nature surface at his expensive boarding school.
When he stuffs iron beads into a classmate's nostrils and her mother shields him, Lyra takes the slap meant for her mother. She remembers everything, and she intends to make everyone pay.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
I warned her, "That family is full of ungrateful people. You can't raise a child like that to be loyal."
She stubbornly refused to believe me and even sent me to live with a neighbor while she raised him.
Later, whenever my brother misbehaved, my mom would yell at him, "Your sister was right. Bad seeds produce bad fruit. You're nothing but a curse. I was blind to choose you over my own daughter."
