When her billionaire biological father, Christian, finally brings her home to the Williams estate, her sister Barbara greets her with fake sweetness and a warning not to take things on her own.

Maia answers by claiming the family's priceless guardian statue and smashing it with a brass candlestick when Barbara tries to snatch her black card. At dinner she keeps Barbara's half-million-dollar allowance, and Christian, furious, orders her to the office to see how Williams money is made. That night she overhears Barbara whispering to Mary for help.

The next morning, as Christian steps from the car, a phone call turns his face grim, and he demands to know whether Maia was in his study.
