At the preschool recital, Todd's mother orders him to hand over the blue cadet uniform his father had custom-made for him, so that Sammy, a motherless boy and today's soloist, can wear it instead. When Todd protests, she rips the Velcro open and dresses Sammy herself, leaving Todd in an oversized spare shirt at the back of the choir while she photographs Sammy's performance.
Todd falls on stage and scrapes his palm, but his mother never notices. His father, David, arrives to find Todd hurt and stripped of his suit, and confronts Rebecca in front of the other parents. She insists Sammy needed to look presentable and calls Todd mature enough to understand, while Sammy clings to her and refuses to give the uniform back.
This is not the first time she has given Todd's things away, and Todd tells his father he no longer wants anything his mother buys him.

The preschool dressing room was absolute chaos, a frantic blur of pint-sized performers running around in bright, stiff costumes.
"Todd, take your suit off. Let Sammy wear it."
My mother’s voice was clipped, her fingers already reaching behind my back to tug at the Velcro strap.
I instinctively clutched my chest.
The miniature blue cadet uniform was special. My dad had taken me to a local tailor shop to get it custom-fitted, measuring my shoulders and inseam with a yellow tape measure.
