Elara has lived this life before. For forty years she was Arthur Vance's wife, and when he was sixty-two he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. She nursed him through his rages, his blows and his cruelties, until their daughter Lillian brought his first love, Serena Reed, into the house to calm him. Elara served them both for three more years, until terminal liver cancer took her — and in her last moments she learned the illness had been a lie, staged so Arthur could keep Serena near while Elara did the work.

She wakes on the day Serena is welcomed at dinner. The crabs never reach her plate; Lillian orders her to fetch and serve, and no one asks what she wants. This time Elara answers differently, and when she proposes having Arthur re-examined by a chief physician, her daughter objects at once.

Arthur and Serena are still performing. Elara means to make them keep it up.
