Ten years ago, Lynn's mother died in a car accident while fetching the strawberry cake her daughter craved, and her father, Matthew Backman, declared at the funeral that Lynn was no longer his daughter. His fortune grew, and he adopted Isla, a girl who resembled his late wife, giving her the master suite, a chauffeur and a closet of new clothes while Lynn took the bus, wore cast-offs and lived in the maid's quarters.

On the girls' sixteenth birthday, Matthew presents Isla with a crystal castle and calls her his one and only princess. Isla's wealthy classmates mock Lynn as a servant and a thief, and when Lynn answers back, Matthew slaps her and orders her to an orphanage. Lynn strikes Isla three times in return, then walks away without regret.

As she leaves, her phone rings. The caller ID reads Mom, a number silent for ten years, and a familiar voice speaks on the other end.
