From the back cover

After being forced to give her heart to her husband's true love, a wife dies in the corridor of the private hospital he built. Their six-year-old son, Micah, begs Walter Shepherd three times to save her, and three times he is thrown out of the ward. A nurse finally admits her to the last available room, but Ruby Sharpe has the bed moved into the hallway so her dog can keep it.

Micah trades his guardian angel pendant for a blanket from a kind stranger, who reveals the blanket is a gift from the hospital's founder, Mr. Shepherd. On his way back, Ruby crushes his hand under her heel and kicks him, threatening to leave him and his mother on the streets. As a spirit, his mother can only watch.

When Walter appears and sees Micah on the floor, Ruby presses close and has the bodyguards hide the boy from sight. Walter frowns and asks whether she hit him.

Inside the book Opening excerpt

Before my death, my six-year-old son tearfully begs him to save me thrice.

The first time, he holds my husband's hand and says I'm coughing up blood.

My husband sneers. "Looks like she's learned tricks—she knows how to teach children to lie now."

Then, he has his bodyguards kick my son out of the ward.

The second time, my son grabs his sleeve and says I'm in so much pain that I'm incoherent.
