From the back cover
Eleanor Vance is a literal-minded legal fanatic who takes every word at face value. When her fiancé Patrick Elkin's stepsister Jessica jokes at their engagement party that Patrick "bullied" her until she was hoarse, Eleanor pins Patrick down, calls the police, and reports him for false imprisonment and battery, citing Jessica's own words as a confession. Jessica protests that it was only banter, but Eleanor plays a recording and demands a forensic examination.
At the police station, the investigation finds no sign of assault, and Patrick's mother Miranda Elkin demands Eleanor kneel and lick Jessica's shoes clean. Patrick threatens to ruin her father's company and end the engagement unless she obeys. When he slaps her phone away and grabs her, Eleanor coolly notes his new offenses.
Patrick vows to sue her for defamation, and Miranda declares the engagement over. Eleanor stands her ground, armed only with the law.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
I'm a literal-minded legal fanatic, born without a hint of irony. When my mother joked that my father's antics made her want to die, I called 911 to report him for attempted murder. When my deskmate swore he’d tear his heart out for me, I pressed a surgical rib spreader to his chest and demanded he fulfill his "gift." Soon, no one dared use figurative language around me—in my presence, everyone became law-abiding and precise.
Then came my engagement party. My fiancé, Patrick Elkin, brought his stepsister Jessica—no blood relation, of course.
