From the back cover
Leo Nash transfers to a school in Crestwood to meet his fiancée, Vivian Sterling, only to be told the Sterling family went bankrupt two years ago and that Vivian now scrapes by on school aid, part-time work, and sometimes cannot afford a meal. The thin, quiet girl pointed out to him as Vivian, who calls herself Iris Thorne, is cold and reserved, and Leo takes her poverty at face value, feeding her, guarding her, and paying her mother's hospital bills.
What Leo does not know is that the girl is a scholarship student impersonating Vivian, a scheme arranged by Vivian and her friend Becca to make the out-of-town fiancé call off the engagement. Vivian, whose family is the wealthiest in Crestwood, wants nothing to do with a new-money boy from a small town, and she bets he will give up within three days. Leo's father, meanwhile, tells him that if he likes the girl, the family will simply support her.
The deception holds until a beautiful girl snatches the breakfast Leo prepared and tells him to look closely, because she is his fiancée.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
To make me call off the engagement, she found a scholarship student at our school to impersonate her.
“One’s new money, the other’s too poor to eat. A perfect match.”
“I bet the new-money kid won’t last three days. He’ll definitely cancel the engagement.”
The scholarship student was beautiful in a cold, fragile way, quiet and reserved.
I fell for it completely. I thought the Sterling family had really gone bankrupt, that she couldn't even afford a proper meal.
My dad’s words echoed in my ears: “Son, bankrupt is bankrupt. We don’t look down on people for being poor.
