Jenny Chen is nineteen, with the mind of a seven-year-old, and her family has married her off to a thirty-six-year-old grocery store owner in the next county for a $30,000 dowry. On Mid-Autumn Festival she reappears at her sister Mia's window, dirty and bruised, a wire sign around her neck reading that she has an owner. She begs to rest at home for a few days.

Mia hides her, but their brother Tyler sees her and tells their parents. When the in-laws call demanding the dowry back, the parents search Mia's room and slap her for lying. Tyler suggests sending Mia in Jenny's place. Mia refuses, but her parents insist it will stay within the family.

Jenny is only nineteen, and the thirty thousand dollars is already spent. Mia has nowhere to turn, and her parents will not call the police.
