On the first day of orientation, Bella Sue claims she can hear Lauren Anderson's thoughts, twisting innocent moments into public accusations that turn classmates, instructors and teachers against her. Ostracized and disbelieved, Lauren takes her own life — and wakes back at the very start of orientation, the day a classmate is reprimanded by the instructor, Mr. Jones.

This time, before Bella can speak, Lauren throws herself to the ground and feigns unconsciousness. Bella recovers quickly, telling Mr. Jones she heard Lauren's thoughts and that the faint was a ruse to skip orientation, even naming the two candies hidden in Lauren's pocket. But Lauren has already moved them, and Mr. Jones finds nothing.

Humiliated, Bella pleads sensitivity and a lapse in perception, and the crowd rushes to excuse her. Mr. Jones orders her to run a lap, while Lauren is carried to the shade. Yet Bella's next accusation is already forming, and Lauren knows the fight has only begun.

On the first day of orientation, Bella went around telling everyone that she could read my mind and hear my thoughts.

When a classmate was chewed out for accidentally moving the wrong way during drills, she sternly pointed at me and said, "Why are you mocking her, thinking that she's uncoordinated and that she's dragging the whole team down? Everyone makes mistakes, so what gives you the right to ridicule her?"

When the instructor was addressing the whole group, she stepped out of formation and confronted me again.
