From the back cover

In seventh grade, Simon Steele and his brother Joseph are each handed a bank card their parents call a college fund, 100,000 dollars apiece. Simon believes it, hiding his card away while Joseph spends freely. Simon wears hand-me-downs, glues his worn shoes back together, and endures a winter in a torn jacket rather than touch a cent.

When graduation arrives, Simon checks the balance for a class trip and finds the account empty. The bank confirms the card has held nothing since it was opened six years ago. His parents admit they used his share to pay debts, while Joseph's card held real money all along. His father calls him ungrateful and refuses to fund his tuition.

Then Joseph posts photos from Velmark, thanking their parents for his travel fund. Betrayed after six years of lies, Simon decides to tear the whole facade apart himself.

Inside the book Opening excerpt

"This is your college fund. We've put 100,000 dollars in each account.

"The PIN is your birthday. Don't touch it unless you absolutely have to."

I listen to them, treating that card like something sacred. I never even buy a single new outfit. When my canvas shoes wear through, I glue the soles back together and keep wearing them.

I tell myself that as long as I'm responsible enough, I'll deserve the "fairness" my parents promise us.
