Clara Miller has a hundred days left, and she wants only one thing: a family portrait with her at the center, impossible to crop out. Yet every album holds only her sister Yvonne's glamor shots, her brother Daxton's baby portraits, and her parents' wedding photo. When her mother gives the navy silk dress Clara bought for the shoot to Yvonne, and her father promises to reschedule, Clara goes to the studio alone.

At home, no one notices her until she sets the framed portrait down. Her family calls it bad luck before Yvonne's engagement dinner and hides it face down. Then a message from the oncology center warns that Clara has forty-eight hours to pay the deposit for a relapsed lymphoma clinical trial, or lose her place.

Clara pays with two years of night-shift savings, while her family, unaware, turns to her once more for Daxton's shoes.
