A businesswoman is out of state, closing a merger and driving a cheap used car between her hotel and the client's office. When a stranger calls to rage that her car is blocking his spot in a commuter lot that becomes a night food-truck park, she rushes over within his thirty-minute deadline.

She finds her windows shattered, her trunk pried open and her hood piled with trash. The vendor, Todd, sneers that her junker is worth less than one of his tires, and the surrounding crowd of vendors and tourists sides with him, mocking her and even yanking her hair. Then she notices the antique rosewood box she had hidden in the back seat is gone.

She tells them the box was worth four and a half million dollars. The lot erupts in laughter, refusing to believe her.

I was out of state, right in the middle of a tense negotiation for a massive supply chain contract, when my phone buzzed with an unknown number.

"Your piece of shit car is blocking my spot!" a man roared through the receiver, his voice grating and thick with impatience. "You have exactly thirty minutes to get down here and move it, or you’re going to be real sorry."

I was completely lost. My client leaned over, catching the tail end of the shouting.
