From the back cover
When her baby brother is born, her father's business suddenly booms, and her mother declares her a curse. Blaming the girl for their past poverty, her parents sell her to her aunt and uncle for a hundred and twenty dollars, even as her uncle pedals through the night to stop the sale. He takes her home, gives her a new name, Joy, and vows to raise her as his own daughter.
But the household is poor, and her aunt is furious that the family's savings were spent on her. Her cousin refuses to accept her as a sister, and her aunt warns that her birth parents might one day come back for her. Joy clings to her uncle's promise that she is priceless, determined to be good to the family that saved her.
Years later, Joy is accepted into Stanford while her aunt and uncle prosper, and her birth parents, now struggling to eat, appear at their door, begging her to return.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
I thought my days of suffering were over, but my biological mother declared me a curse.
She said we were poor because of me, and my brother was the family’s lucky star. If they didn't get rid of me, I’d drag the whole family down.
So, I was sold to my aunt and uncle.
Years later, I got into Stanford, and my aunt and uncle were rolling in money.
My biological parents, meanwhile, were struggling to put food on the table. They clung to our doorstep, refusing to leave.
